Water Conservation and Drought Resistance

The devastating impacts of drought and poor water management on our food system are no secret.

Creating a water capture and management plan is essential for any food production and should include everything from harvesting water, its storage, distribution channels, water-senstive planting and the infrastructure used to grow food.

The Urban Farm has employed wicking beds to manage water, in both a raised bed and market garden format. Plans are underway to install water capture capacity on the roof of the ClimateSmart Food Classroom, leading to our on-site tank. Resources detailing our water system are currently being developed – check back soon.
